Bolzano in winter
Advent Waltherplatz — the heart of winter Bolzano
The Christmas markets on Waltherplatz square are the oldest and most important Advent market in South Tyrol. Every year they attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from across Europe — and rightly so.
Wooden stalls offer handicrafts, local delicacies and traditional crafts. Mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and the scent of pine under snow-capped Dolomites create an atmosphere that cannot be described — it needs to be experienced.
The markets run from late November to 6 January. The square is surrounded by the historic Gothic cathedral and arcaded houses — in the evening illuminated by the market lights, it is a picture-perfect scene.
Wine trails
Strada del Vino — the South Tyrolean wine road
The Strada del Vino (Südtiroler Weinstraße) is a 73 km route connecting over 20 wine villages south of Bolzano. More than two hundred wineries open their doors to visitors for tastings and tours.
South Tyrol is home to unique varieties such as Lagrein, Vernatsch and Gewürztraminer. The region has one of the highest percentages of DOC-classified wines in all of Italy — exceptional quality in every bottle.
Our exclusive SkyAlps partnership allows you to bring home up to 6 bottles of wine directly in your cabin luggage.
Local specialities
Six flavours of South Tyrol
South Tyrolean cuisine is a unique blend of Tyrolean and Italian traditions. Here are the specialities you must not miss.
Traditional smoked meat
Speck
Cured and smoked ham made by the traditional South Tyrolean method — alternating smoking and mountain air for at least 22 weeks.
Native wine variety
Lagrein
A unique red wine grown exclusively in the Bolzano basin. Dark, full-bodied with notes of cherry and chocolate. Ideal with local meat dishes.
Filled pasta
Schlutzkrapfen
South Tyrolean ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta, served with clarified butter and Parmesan. The perfect union of Tyrolean and Italian cuisine.
Bread dumplings
Knödel
Traditional Alpine dish in dozens of varieties — cheese, spinach, bacon. Served in beef broth or as a side dish to braised meat.
Grey cheese
Graukäse
A natural skimmed cheese from Pustertal aged without starter culture. Strong, sharp flavour — locals serve it with vinegar, oil and onion as a typical starter.
Apple strudel
Apfelstrudel
Classic Alpine dessert — fine pastry with apples, cinnamon, raisins and pine nuts. In South Tyrol it is baked using local Alto Adige IGP apples.
